Malnutrition is a silent crisis affecting millions of children around the world. Without proper nutrition, children face stunted growth, weakened immune systems, and reduced mental and physical development. But together, we can change that.
JMV Child Care Foundation is a dedicated welfare and humanitarian organization focused on child welfare. Founded in 2005 and based in Delhi since 2022, we operate at the grassroots level to support and empower vulnerable children. Our initiatives primarily target education and nutrition in both urban slums and rural areas across India.
India faces a significant school dropout rate of 12.6%, predominantly driven by poverty and lack of access. At JMV, our mission is to provide all children with equal opportunities to succeed and become self-sufficient.
In the Global Hunger Index 2023, India is ranked 111th out of 125 countries and reports the highest child wasting rate at 18.7%. This indicates severe undernutrition and hunger, a situation that has worsened from 107th out of 121 countries in 2022.
Child malnutrition in India is a critical issue that affects millions of children and has significant consequences on their physical and cognitive development. Here are some key points related to child malnutrition in the country:
Stunting (low height for age): Around 35-40% of children under the age of five are stunted. Stunting is a long-term consequence of chronic malnutrition and affects growth and development.
Poverty: A significant portion of the population lives below the poverty line, limiting access to nutritious food.
Inadequate Maternal Nutrition: Poor health and nutrition of mothers during pregnancy lead to low birth weight and increased vulnerability to malnutrition.
Lack of Healthcare: Limited access to healthcare services, immunization, and sanitation exacerbates the problem.
Inadequate Childcare Practices: Improper infant and young child feeding practices, such as not breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months, are prevalent.
Gender Disparities: Girls, particularly, may suffer from inadequate food and healthcare compared to boys due to cultural practices.
Some states, such as Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh, have higher levels of malnutrition compared to other states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu, which perform better due to better healthcare infrastructure and governance.
Physical and Cognitive Development: Malnutrition hinders children’s ability to reach their full potential, affecting school performance and productivity in later life.
Increased Mortality Rates: Malnutrition is a leading factor in child mortality, contributing to around 68% of deaths in children under five.
Despite being one of the fastest-growing economies, India accounts for one of the highest percentages of malnourished children globally. Programs like UNICEF and WHO are actively working with the Indian government to combat malnutrition.
Efforts to combat malnutrition in India require a multi-faceted approach, combining health, education, and social support interventions.

Events and Updates
In response to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, the Indian government has implemented a nationwide lockdown. During this challenging time, the JMV Child Care Foundation has collaborated closely with government agencies to provide relief. We have distributed relief kits, including dry rations and hygiene supplies, to thousands of individuals across the country. By following strict safety and hygiene protocols, we have successfully delivered 1 million dry grocery kits and 50,000 hygiene kits to marginalized and low-income groups, including daily wage workers, migrant laborers, construction site workers, and people in need.
We are currently partnering with various organizations across 15 states, serving urban villages and slums to continue our vital relief efforts.
Through our Mission Shiksha, we provide basic education to underprivileged children, focusing on getting out-of-school children back into the education system. We believe education is the foundation for a brighter future.
With 73% of girls not progressing past 10 years of schooling, we are committed to providing equal opportunities for girls through specialized educational programs and support systems, ensuring they have a fair start in life.
We work with communities to provide training and resources that help individuals develop sustainable livelihood options, enabling them to improve their quality of life.
Our Mission Swasth program brings mobile healthcare units to rural and underserved urban areas. From preventive care to treatment, we aim to make healthcare accessible and affordable for all.
We empower women with life skills, business knowledge, and vocational training, creating pathways for economic independence and breaking the cycle of poverty.
Malnutrition affects millions of children. We provide essential nutrition to children and pregnant women, ensuring their physical and mental well-being.
